Edge Glueing
Abraham and Isaac Window St. Patrick Cathedral
The hand painted face below is from a window we recently restored at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The face had been damaged by a rock thrown at the stained glass window. The break was a clean break, although there was a large chip of glass missing from the face. By using new epoxies developed for the glass restoration arts we were able to glue the face back together again and fill the chip. The filled chip left a clear hole in the face. By using cold paint we were able to seamlessly blend the mended area with the rest of the hand painted glass. In the past a break like this would have been mended by joining the broken pieces with copper foil or lead, leaving a lead line running through the face.
