Restored Tiffany (designed) window 1903 "Three Marys at the Tomb"

First Presbyterian Church, Hillsboro, TX.

When Stanton Glass Studio was asked to restore this window the stained glass panels were stored in an old, musty plywood-crate. The stained glass panels were in such poor condition they could hardly be lifted out of the crate without the leaded glass panels falling apart. The lead came was white with oxidation and very brittle. In the early 70’s the congregation moved these windows from the original church to their new church building. They had a stained glass company restore the windows. The quality of restoration was substandard. It’s possible this company lost or discarded a good amount of the glass plating during the restoration process. These panels are made up of several layers of double-plated stained and drapery glass. Over time, the layers of double-plating filled with dirt and water. The glass was so dense with dirt that it  looked opaque in the sunlight.

Some of the plated pieces were missing and a large amount of the glass was broken. Though Tiffany Studio didn't make this window, we feel it is a wonderful copy of his work. We took a photo of Tiffany's Three Mary's window and overlaid it with the Hillsboro window in Adobe Photoshop. The lead lines around the figures of the women matched perfectly. The pose of the angel, except for the wings, matched as well.

We were asked to install the restored windows into a wall in the church’s fellowship hall.

Stanton’s carpentry crew opened a hole in the drywall for the window panels to fit into and built an 18’ long closet to house the lighting for the window. The carpenters created a period window face frame and sills out of long-leaf yellow pine.
